The Murphey Candler Girls Softball Association has been running strong for over 40 years. We play at Murphey Candler Park — a DeKalb County park — located just inside the perimeter between Chamblee and Ashford Dunwoody Roads. The association is made up entirely of volunteer members that work year round planning and running softball programs in the Spring and Fall. This Spring we’ll have nearly 400 girls playing softball between the ages of four and 17. We are recognized as having one of the strongest and most long lasting programs in Atlanta. Many of our girls playing today play on the same fields that their mothers did when they were young. If you ever long for a slice of American pie we invite you to come out some Saturday this Spring and enjoy the sights of kids being kids while playing some really great softball.
Our fees remain modest and are set to cover costs and little more. Each year we receive a small amount of donations that are saved as reserves, put to use making improvements around the park, or for funding girls that want to play but don’t have the financial means to do so.
The County recently did a great job rehabbing four of our five fields. The fifth field is our largest and played on by girls ages 10 and up as specified by the American Softball Association, with which we are affiliated. Field 5, as we call it, is in dire need of repair. Field 5 floods when it rains. The fields drain into the dugouts and after just a moderate rain you’ll find three to four inches of mud, which used to be infield, covering the entire dugout’s floor. The fences surrounding the fields are falling apart to the point of being hazardous, light fixtures are failing and the scoreboard no longer works. In short, Field 5 needs all of our help.
Fundraising, especially for girl’s sports, is not easily done. While Field 5 is our priority we have other projects lined up around the park that need to be funded before they can be completed.
